The goal is more consistent availability across the season. That requires enough physical capacity for the workload and a plan that can change when the athlete's response changes.

A Tommy John surgery costs 12-18 months, a shoulder injury can cost a season, and even a “minor” flexor strain costs 6-8 weeks. Add up the missed time across a career and the math is brutal.

Capacity is built on purpose

Heavy strength work, plyometrics, conditioning, and workload planning do most of the long-term work. When appropriate, options such as blood-flow restriction let us train useful capacity with lower external loads during a restricted or high-fatigue phase.

WORKLOAD MANAGEMENT

Workload trends, not just pitch counts

Pitch counts are one part of workload management. We also review bullpen sessions, long toss, weighted-ball work, warm-up throws, positional play, symptoms, strength, and recovery. Measures such as acute-to-chronic workload ratio can add context, but no single number acts as a universal safety threshold. The plan is adjusted to the athlete’s recent workload and response.

MECHANICAL SCREENING

Localized tissue irritation, not global optimization

Research has not established mechanics as a stand-alone predictor of UCL injury. Specific movement patterns may still contribute to localized irritation for an individual athlete. We use video to look for those patterns, not to chase one ideal arm action.

The flexor-pronator group is your UCL's real protection

FDS provides 46% anatomical coverage of the UCL, and FCU overlaps 21%. These muscles contribute to dynamic stability at the elbow. Building their capacity often requires progressive resistance beyond light band work. We use grip and forearm loading alongside full-body strength work.

What you do between sessions matters more than the sessions

Recovery is not passive: sleep quality, nutrition timing, soft tissue work, active recovery sessions, and periodized deloads are all part of the plan. We structure recovery into the program the same way we structure training: with intention and measurement.

Because velocity correlates with valgus torque

Velocity relates to elbow varus torque, and one prospective study found an association between higher torque and UCL surgery. We track velocity, workload, grip, and range-of-motion trends. Changes give us a reason to review the plan; they do not predict an injury.

Program Design

The program serves healthy pitchers who want arm-health monitoring, workload management, and enough physical capacity for their current throwing plan. Athletes with pain or an injury enter rehab. Athletic Potential may address basic pitch shape or command when it informs the plan. Detailed pitch design, velocity development, or pitching performance work is better handled by Driveline, the athlete’s team, or another pitching coach.
Prevention is an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. We typically start with an initial assessment and 8-12 week block to establish baselines, address deficits, and build foundational capacity. From there, programming is adjusted seasonally based on your competitive schedule, training goals, and monitoring data.
Both. Off-season work builds capacity through heavier loading and targeted physical preparation. In-season work maintains those qualities and monitors changes that may signal rising injury risk. The program follows your competitive calendar and existing throwing plan.

Data & Technology

We use PULSE for arm speed and throw counts, ArmCare for strength screening, high-speed video for symptom-linked movement questions, radar guns, and workload monitoring. The data guides arm-health and training decisions. Driveline handles performance motion capture and pitching-development analysis.
An in-person assessment gives us the most comprehensive data. However, we can work with high-quality video submissions for remote athletes. The more data we have, the better our recommendations, but we would rather work with what we can get than not work with you at all.
We recommend a full reassessment every 12-16 weeks, or at major training transitions (pre-season, in-season start, post-season). Between assessments, we monitor ongoing metrics like velocity trends, range of motion, and training loads to catch changes early.

Results & Expectations

Possibly, and often yes. When you fix mechanical inefficiencies, build strength, and optimize recovery, velocity tends to improve as a byproduct. But the primary goal is durability. A healthy arm that is available every fifth day is more valuable than a cannon that misses half the season.
The approach can be adapted for different levels, training ages, and competitive demands. The assessment and program should match the individual athlete.
Arm care (band work, PlyoCare, sleeper stretches) is one small piece of the puzzle, necessary, but nowhere near sufficient on its own. This program wraps that routine inside a full system: strength training, workload management, mechanical assessment, recovery planning, and ongoing monitoring.
